Our Mission
Julia Patricia Coey was a vibrant young woman who travelled widely both in Canada and throughout the world. As a child, growing up in Mississauga, she showed her love for animals early on. Pets were mourned with elaborate burial rituals and birds and strays were rescued.
She had many varied work experiences from a researcher for a public opinion research firm to a barista making the ultimate cappuccino. She worked in London as a manager for the Cannes Radio Festival and finally with the Toronto Wildlife Centre as a fundraiser, her dream job working with sick or injured wildlife.
Julia went on a world ‘walk about’ only to have her travels cut short by 9/11
She found time in all her pursuits to get two degrees, a BA in English from Wilfrid Laurier and a Masters in Journalism from Ryerson University in Toronto.
Julia wrote prolifically, appearing in a number of prestigious publications. Chatelaine, Toronto Life among others. Her book " Animal Hospital" sold out in its first printing. She reported on the local “Indie” scene both in London and Toronto.
Julia, a wonderful caring person, made friends easily and with people from all walks of life, which is why her family and friends decided to create the foundation as a lasting tribute to this unique young woman.
Julia's foundation will donate to other charities on an annual basis. These will be chosen each year from a list of charities to be decided by Julia's team. These will represent causes and projects that Julia herself supported. Julia supported many causes during her short time here, the environment, animal welfare, the homeless and underdogs everywhere.
